Updating newer Tom Tom's

I am very out of touch with updating Tom Tom devices as I have always had a sat nav built into my car over previous years.

I might be buying a car that doesn't have satnav, so if I was to buy a new Tom Tom device would I be able to update it via files on the internet or are they all sold with lifetime updates these days?

I think there all lifetime updates now also newer TomToms are not Fat32 format anymore so you cannot see files anymore if you have an Android phone you can download Dodgy app of the net which gets all map updates and speed cameras on my phone

My TomTom 6200 is 6 years old, and came with lifetime update. They alert every three months to say that a new map is available. I then download over wifi from home internet - takes about 30 minutes.

All very easy, but no idea if they use the same process for current devices.

One word of warning. the lifetime "promise" only applies to getting maps, I lost my traffic updates recently. I assume the new maps feature will run out at some time.

I prefer using tomtom than the car satnav, but my in car satnav is particularly poor.

I still have my very old Tom Tom Go 300, I think it is called and updated that for many years, thanks to various websites. It was slow but worked. No way it could cope now. I would have to buy a brand new unit if the car I purchase doesn't have sat nav.

isnt google maps good enough? what are the benefits of TomTom these days. the truck version with height/width restrictions could come in handy, google takes you down some sketchy roads sometimes.

Im still running the 6200 still get maps traffic (traffic now thou only through Bluetooth or personal hotspot via connected phone ) and speed cameras , im sure they are slowing it down just to push you into a newer model.
Also had a free usa map sept last year for holiday that may have been in the package when i purchase it way to long ago to remember.
I notice all the new ones now come with 1 year of everything think they screwed up with the lifetime lost lots of £££$$$$.

My 2020 style Golf comes with maps that get over the air updates. It works with traffic but I prefer Waze running through Car Play as 99% of the time the warnings are correct, pot holes, Mobile speed cameras and traffic. I gave my old TomTom unit away to a friend who wanted to drive in an old Land Rover, this unit had maps for life so it suited him.

Yes I think Waze is excellent with my Android Auto - although had recent isues when used alongside new dash cam which sets up its own wifi and seems to confuse Waze!

I think that the so called 'traffic updates' run out after 5 years as seemingly have something to do with the SIM. Supposedly there is a way to link mobile phone to TomTom to get the 'traffic updates' for free....and burn through your data! I am sticking with my Tom Tom as I like the speed camera updates. Younger folk laugh at me and say that I should be using google maps and the Waze app for speed cameras and tossing the TomTom out!

Yeah they have a 3g sim that's getting switched off , I just turn on my mobile hotspot on on the phone and have the tom tom connected it still works fine then for traffic ,They say it will also work via Bluetooth connected to phone i could not get that to work at all.
But i have unlimited data not sure how much it would eat away.
