All the ones that claim to be free are either only free to download but not to use, or free for a week or two then the pay to continue to use comes up.
It appears that all the original free ones now fall into the two categories above.

Avast. I have it on a few of my lesser used computers and still free and updated regularly.
Yes, you get messages about upgrading to a paid version, but you can just close those messages down.

Windows security is more than adequate. You don't need anything else.
I doubt that windows security will work on my win 7 PC's

Avira has also a Free Antivir .
I know most of us have used the free/hacked versions for the last prob 15 years myself included , there are still plenty to download with cracks .
But i decided to pay for it the last few years as i use pc for my business as well .
I didn't think the risk was worth it , if only personal use no banking on the pc i would still be searching them out.
