    Little Richard dies at 87.

Little Richard (Richard Wayne Penniman) has died aged 87 his family have announced.

I was lucky enough to see him perform live on at least half a dozen occasions in the late 50s and early 60s. He was one of the most dynamic singers of that era and could faithfully perform his R&R hits live on stage.

Sad as it is to see him pass he had a good life except for the latter years where he suffered from painful hips.

RIP Richard, you live on in your music.

Yet another legend has passed - he helped start rock and roll alongside the late Chuck Berry - suppose he actually managed to achieve a long and interesting life, varying between brilliant music and the Church!
RIP Little Richard (Richard Penniman), thank you for entertaining us all!

Back in that era you had to order records if they weren't already in the top 20 particularly the 7inch 45rpm versions.

A mate and I used to listen to AFN, Luxembourg and could occasionally receive E. Coast USA stations on short wave radio. We were NME readers so knew what was on the charts in the USA and thus what to look out for in the R&R chart. It was the era of DJ Alan Freed and his Saturday night Jamboree radio show (Freed went on the promote some R&R movies; great to see the rising stars but appalling story lines). Anyway after ordering about 5 records that eventually became hits they would order 20 at a time knowing that they would sell. Our one great failure was Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley which was a hit in the USA because it was also a kids TV cartoon show.

Although Little Richard was featured in Freed's films the best footage of him from the 50's was in The Girl Can't Help It - a colour film promoting Jayne Mansfield's career.

I used to listen to Luxemburg every night in my youth - 208 metres Medium wave - my favourite at that time was actually Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future at 715pm every night!

It is quite an eye opener to visit Junglinster (Radio Luxemburg's transmitter area). The original masts, as used in WW2, are on top of a small hill and fairly impressive but the ones from later are twice the height but in the nearby valley.

Radio fans will know that the groups of three masts were configured in such a way that the phasing could be changed to alter the direction of the radiation pattern. For UK listeners the phase was changed at 6pm and the signal was the first bounce off the ionosphere at 600km (400miles) away. The pirates in the North Sea and the Irish Sea largely depleted RL's audience as they were receivable during the daytime too.
