Your dish should have a coating of the correct protection already on it if it's brand new. Also you do get motors that have plastic cog wheels obviously metal is better but I suppose a little WD40 would not do any harm. If you've to paint your because of rust matt paint after a light rub down to remove any loose rust.

    Hope this helps

Use a silicon type grease which you can get in a spray tin.Any Diy shop should have it.
It will protect any visible nuts & bolts & is plastic friendly.
Halfords have an item called Waxol I think. It comes in a spray tin & is used to spray inside car doors to protects them from rust & condensation.
WD40 is used to free out rusted nuts & bolts & is not ideal as a lubricator especially if theres any plastic involved like gears in actuators etc.

On the subject of the vaseline.
Extend the actuator as far as it will normally be & smear on a very thin coating with your hand or a cloth to the actuator rod.
You should do this every few months.
Good luck with the project & let us know how you get on.

Do not use Vaseline, dirt will attach and slowly damage the seals.
Use a silicone based spray on the arm.
Best option to moving joints is marine grease, lucky I sail so have plenty, it is also resistant to salt waterproof, etc
It will usually be white and lithum based.
