A modern "Universal" LNB requires a 22 kHz signal at 0.5v p-p to switch its Local Oscillator to 10.6 GHz ("high band"). Otherwise it uses its 9.75 GHz oscillator.

22KHz switch is used to switch between two devices. All Free To Air satellite receivers have 22KHz switch capabilities. By sending a 22KHz tone to the switch, the receiver controls the ports. It can be used as a simple A/B switch to switch between two different satellite LNBFs or two different DiSEqC switches. By turning the 22KHz option on & off, or to "0" & "22K" on your receiver, the receiver will automatically switch between the two ports allowing reliable operation that sometimes fails when using a 2X1 DiSEqC switch.
