Very unlikely only air in HD there has to be SD version same with all Sky channels
as for availability in UK nope unless via C/S ...the Laws in UK forbid EPL 3pm football to be shown Live on UK TV and still stands unless it has changed in past few weeks without any public announcements ?? ..this Rule/Law does not exist in ROI which is the likely loophole that is going to be exploited soon ,
Setanta were bought by Eir [ Eircom telephone provider ] and will likely show the usual handfull of 3pm games as per last season .

Cheers Barney - I've always been a little confused with Setanta, as I'd thought they'd gone bust years ago, but realise that they did continue in ROI of course!

Setanta/Eir have lost the 3pm rights for the next 3 seasons to Sky Sports Ireland.

Nobody knows as of yet if a new channel will be set up specifically for Ireland but there is channels already aimed at Ireland for advertising reasons - so maybe one of them will get the 3pm but there is 0 chance a UK card will open this.

That HD only 3pm could be true but only rumours as of yet.

HD only as we all know means no CS

thats what i thought alot easier to restrict epl 3pm in ireland to hd only then stops uk viewing which of course is why sky have purchased the rights .

What a flipping pain eh, all suggesting that if Sky cant show 3pm footie in UK, then in their view why should WE - poor viewers watch it either???
    How petty can they be?

    Well now we know!!

Setanta only went bust in England, they still operate in Ireland.

At the end of last season when Sty bought the rights to share the EPL coverage in Ireland, I suspected it was a backdoor opening to show EPL in the UK, the HD only seems feasible as they have now upgraded their HD encryption.

    Better on foreign.

And as usual its their main subscribers (Sky I mean) who continue to suffer, being in the UK despite paying Sky's exorbitant fees - and for what?

PS: See Sky not showing US Open Tennis this year, due to ongoing rising costs - mainly of course brought on by themselves and their unethical activities over the years!! lol!!

Is there going to be an SD as well as an HD version of this ?

Basically, Is Sky Sports 5 Ireland SD going to show the 3pm kick offs ?

    Thanks

Nothing concrete on that but if I was to put money on it, I'd say so yes.

This has nothing to do with Sky, there are laws in place in the UK to not allow games between 3 & 5.15 be shown Live.

As we are nothing to do with the UK we get a 3pm.

It's a British Ruling - nothing to do with EU

I believe it is a Sly Ruling, when they got the Rights to the Premier League, I think they stipulated that there would be No 3pm Kick Offs on Saturdays, and it was the Euopeans who started showing the 3pm kick offs, and of course Ruppie tried and sucessfully stopped some of them, including the Clubs and Pubs in the UK.

So why are there no Saturday 3pm matches on TV?

It all started in the 1960s. Convinced by Burnley Chairman Bob Lord, Football League Chairmen joined forces to halt the airing of matches at 3pm on a Saturday. But why? Lord felt that big games being televised at that time would hurt attendances for smaller clubs, like his Burnley team.

Reasoning that people would rather watch a big game than support their local team, these Chairmen feared the potential loss of match-day revenue that could occur.

And so, based on that premise, with no real proof other than a hunch it came to pass that no match on a Saturday between 2:45 and 5:15 could be aired on TV within the UK. This has remained in place ever since, with the exception of the FA Cup final which has always been shown on a Saturday at 3pm until only recently when it was switched to 5pm in a controversial move by the FA.

The argument used is if 3pm games are shown 'live' in the UK it will affect ground attendancies

In Germany I believe all games are shown on TV & yet games have very high attendencies

Could the cost of attending the games have some bearing on this?

For a Prem game including travel & beer your probably looking at £100 for a day out

I think the well known UK broadcaster has shot itself in the foot in terms of bidding so much for the rights

The advances in Kodi technology will most probably seriously dent their business plans
