If you are referring to WinXP then the answer may be to stop so much loading at start-up.

WinPatrol has a nice opening screen that shows all of the programs that are loaded at start-up and can disable them with a highlight and a click. Each loaded item eats away at resources and memory.

WinXP is already very greedy in comparison to Linux but for most users Linux needs an extra step in understanding and most people can barely handle Windoze - present company excepted.
