Dana Andrews stars as a New England State Attorney who determines to prove vagrant Arthur Kennedy innocent of the murder of a prominent churchman. With Lee J Cobb, and Jane Wyatt.

18:40 Always Film (1989) Not necessarily Steven Spielberg's greatest hit but still more interesting and endearing than what most directors could create. Richard Dreyfuss stars a wartime pilot who dies and comes back as a ghost to inspire the man who replaces him. An effective and affecting romantic comedy.

    21:00 Domestic Disturbance Film (2001)

Thriller starring John Travolta as a divorced dad forced into a confrontation with his son's stepfather, played by Vince Vaughn.

    22:40 The Hustler Film (1961)

Scandal follows when she becomes simultaneously involved with Cabinet Minister John Profumo and Soviet naval officer Eugene Ivanov. Also starring Ian McKellan.

John Carpenter's second feature is a stylishly straightforward thriller in which cops and cons are trapped in a small LA police station by a heavily armed gang intent on freeing one of the prisoners. Edge-of-seat stuff, with Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston and Laurie Zimmer holding the fort superbly.

00:50 The Pillow Book Film (1995)

Peter Greenaway's film is a feast for the eye but the story itself is equally absorbing. Nagiko (Vivian Wu) who has a fetish for calligraphy on the human body meets ideal soul-mate Jerome (Ewan McGregor), an English translator sent to Japan. A torrid, lurid melodrama, full of passion, jealousy and revenge.

Dated comedy that still provides sparks of hilarity, starring Peggy Mount, Shirley Eaton, Ronald Lewis and Gordon Jackson (888)

    18:35pm The Apartment (PG) 1960

Comedy drama starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, which garnered best picture and the best director Oscars for Billy Wilder. Lemmon plays a lonely insurance clerk, who rents out his flat to executives for their romantic liaisons, but then finds one of them has set his sights on his girl (MacLaine). The film is on the long side, but it fizzes along nicely

Poverty-stricken squire Heath Ledger spies an opportunity to make his dreams come true when his employer pops his clogs — and takes his place as a knight of the realm, launching himself on the road to riches. However, his ruse is jeopardised by a dastardly nobleman. Thoroughly entertaining action-packed comedy, with Ledger perfectly cast as the hero, alongside Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell and Paul Bettany, who gives a scene-stealing performance as Geoffrey Chaucer (888)

    23:30pm Braindead (18) 1992

A shy man's home is overrun by the undead, leading to a blood-spattered finale that has to be seen to be believed. Timothy Balme and Elizabeth Moody star in this gory comic horror, definitely not for the faint-hearted. Directed by Peter Jackson, who went on to film epic adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and King Kong (888)
