    Recording from Firestick

    Hi everyone,
I have the splitter, could someone tell me the most economic way to record from a firestick?
    Many thanks,
    Tim.

I'd be interested if there is a direct way.

At present I can record any HDMI source using an HDMI to USB2 adapter (about €15 from that well known ******* site, usually from China) and rrecording on my Laptop/PC.

The adapter is a bit fiddly to set up regards matching the source parameters but works well once sorted.

    Thanks Detlef,
I was looking at a HDMI to USB2 adapter.
Is it the one that states only for use with Windows XP,Vista 7, 8,9,10?
There is something called Doo Goodbang or Goodbang Doo advertised on Y Tube
But I can't find the sales site.
    Cheers,
    Tim.

Professional HDMI to USB units cost over €300 but I was surrprised to see that a simple dongle was available.

I didn't do a lot of research before buying my HDMI to USB device but intended to use it with Windows OS. I took a punt at the price that I could get it working with W10 which it did.

I haven't used it with my Firestick yet but it has worked with all the HDMI devices I have tried so far (it was originally bought to save some programs recorded in HD on a digibox, prior to ditching Sly).

There are loads of s/w recorders mentioned on Google but most are for Android OS versions greater than 4.4 .

Warning: I should add that if you search on HDMI to USB most links are for the opposite, that is so you can send video to an HDMI TV.

    Thanks for your reply Detlef,

Is it this one: HDMI to USB 2.0 Video Capture Card HD 1080P Records For Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10?

And can I retrieve the recording from my PC with a USB, and play it on my smart TV?
    Cheers,
    Tim.

That's the one I have. I see you can now get one from the UK (mine was from China or Hong Kong and took about 3 weeks to arrive).

The capture s/w they supplied was generic (and possibly ripped off) but is fully featured.

If you do get one I recommend using it in a well vented area as it gets very hot. If it locks up and generally mis-behaves, just try another USB port - it works for me.

    Thank you Detlef,,
Will have a little go with this. Don't need to record much so its not worth splashing out.
And someone may come up with an alternative for both of us.
    Cheers again,
    Tim.

I didn't answer the second part of your post..

Once recorded onto my PC in MP4 I can do a whole host of methods to watch it on my Sony semi-smart TV.

The easiest is that my laptop has an HDMI out.
Or copy the file to a USB memory stick and play it from there.
Play it from my NAS network storage.
Yet another way is to copy the file to my Humax FreeSat box and play it from there.

    The choice is yours.

Some addons allow you to download, the crew does and various others. Check in tools and settings for the addons.

Doesn't that end up with a VHS type quality. I tried something like that when trying to retrieve some favourite recordings from a Sly digibox but wasn't pleased with the quality.

A few searches said that there is a loss of quality doing that - not sure why. Taking the HDMI (digital) and streaming it to USB (digital) seems to work well if the device is set to mimic the original format (I assume it doesn't do any conversion).

    Have you tested ?

I download to the HDD on my Duo4K and get perfect 1080p with 5.1 playback

It's a download, why would you get a loss of quality ?

Will try The Crew this weekend - seems to be generally recommended.

I did say that I can't see why such add-ons would lose quality but that is the internet for you.

When you set it up you need to give access to movie and tv downloads, you cant have just movie for some strange reason.
