    Warning - windows 10 update

For those with dual boot systems - the new windows 10 update breaks grub bootloader (again). (Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809 amd64 2019-04)

If you dual boot - before doing the update, make sure you download an ubuntu live cd so you can restore your grub bootloader or you won't be able to boot your computer into Windows or Linux without restoring your bootloader first.

Also I disabled my camera + microphone in the control panel yesterday - windows update enabled them again without any warning.

No only the above, but windows decided to destory my ext4 linux partition and install a recovery partition, See screenshot:

So now all my linux stuff and software I was working on is lost, I'm pretty annoyed to be honest as I spent months doing mods to that sofware I was making.

Just letting you know, to save you some stress.

mrdude in the latest Computer active magazine issue 552 24th April - 7th May, on page 38 there is a workshop 1 ' Reverse the May Update if disaster strikes ' it states Microsoft only gives you a 10 days to roll back.

The process is shown in steps - step 1 to step 7 using pictures with notes.

Don't know if this helps your problem but if it is the same update you should have time to roll back?

Thanks for this. As I run Ubuntu with Win 10 I checked to see & notice I have not had this update yet assuming it is KB4489899. Either way I have done a complete system backup using ebackuper just in case. Should really be doing this regularly anyway but being human I tend toward complacancy a trite too much some times.

The Computer active magazine also states this update has been put back till the end of May, also Windows Home users will be able to delay the update for seven days at a time.
However you can do this only five times in order to postpone it for the 35-day maximum.

I wish I hadn't updated, but it's too late for me, a restore to a previous version wouldn't fix the drive partitions - but that's life. I've decided to just install Linux on a removable USB drive now, so windows can never mess with it ever again. I put a bootloader on that so I can also use it for windows recovery and some other utils & backup creation. I probably should have done that before now. I'm not a big fan of Microsoft just now though, stuff like this just makes me want to switch to Linux permanently - but I still need to use windows based app a lot of the time and wine (linux app) doesn't work with some of those.

I know it is closing the gate after the horse but would using Virtualisation (VMware vm's etc) be an option for you so as to avoid any future repeat of this disaster? Else, sure, why not stick with Linux & run Win 10 in VritualBox or the like.
