England 1966 World Cup-Winning Goalie Gordon Banks dies aged 81

His family said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce that Gordon passed away peacefully overnight.

"We are devastated to lose him but we have so many happy memories and could not have been more proud of him.

"We would ask that the privacy of the family is respected at this time."

Perhaps the greatest ever keeper, Banks is best remembered for an unbelievable save against Brazil legend Pele.

The striker admitted he shouted "goal" as he powered a header only for Banks to miraculously dive and scoop it one-handed over his bar.

Pele was left in disbelief at the stop.

Banks later remarked: "They won't remember me for winning the World Cup. It will be for that save."

He was undisputed first choice for the 1966 World Cup squad, and was Fifa's Goalkeeper Of The Year" for six straight years between 1966 and 1971.

I've seen some great goalkeepers over the years, but Gordon Banks could well have been the best, especially after being a 1966 World Cup Winner - and in later years made that now legendary save from Pele whilst England were playing Brazil!
He mentored my other favourite English goalkeeper. Peter Shilton during Peter's early career first at Leicester and then at Forest.
RIP the legendary Gordon Banks, a true football great of our time and thanks for all the pleasure you gave us!

Yeah I also remember how Eusebio ran up and patted him on the back (as I remember) for making an incredible save against Portugal.
Gordon had real balls as even after losing sight in one eye he contunued to play on.

R.I.P. Gordon, you were my hero, watched you many times at Stoke when I was young and leaning to be a goalkeeper. God rest in heaven.

No not a stoke fan but a fan of any player I think is outstanding like messi ,pele , moore, Charlton.etc.
And on the rest of your post, extrafacto as you said all those good comments about the man, and he probably didn't want any one to know his kindness and generosity.
    A sad day today.
