    Scam Warning

Had a scam this morning on my mobile allegedly from the DVLA saying I had a tax refund owed to me and this was the last opportunity to claim please follow this link.
The link and web page was all very plausible but of coarse all they wanted was my bank details to process the payment.
The DVLA send out a cheque for tax refunds and that's it

I had a very plausible sounding call yesterday via an ordinary std landline number (01248361932) purporting to be from BT Openreach, wanting to upgrade my protection from hackers software with their own comprehensive software!
Unfortunately I had quite a lot on my mind at the time - family issues, Sly tv, etc etc probably my usual mega guard was a bit down - and after nearly 2hrs I almost lost a massive amount of money, despite having never handed over any account details, etc - but luckily I managed to retrieve the situation with a lot of help from my bank (for ONCE!! lol!!) and various other involved parties!
So beware if you get an unexpected call from a fake BT Openreach 'person'!!

Funnily enough I was going to post a warning to members myself when I got home .I had a text today asking me to contact dvla and gave a link .They had tried numerous times and this was my'lastchance'to contact them .I know my road tax is paid by direct debit so guessed it was a scam.

My brother in law (who is a retired Charted Accountant) had exactly the same BT scam he was really sucked in and nearly lost 9 grand from his account and it was only the Bank contacting to see if it was a genuine transaction that saved the day. Scared the **** out of him caused real problems had to change all his bank details and get his computer professionally cleaned.

Ditto w.r.t. "BT" (and we haven't been a BT customer for 20yrs - I just tell those callers that fact but that does not seem to "register"!) and lot's of other scam calls & emails!

Fair comment mate, but in UK BT Openreach provide ALL the broadband/landline cables, for either BT customers, or Sky. or Vodafone, or TalkTalk, etc etc., so my call did seem plausible - at first!!!

TOTALLY implausible in our case as we have been "Virgin" (started as "Cable Corporation"!) customers since the early 1990s!
PS: we actually have been on a coax cable connection to the "Virgin" cabinet about 20yrds away - BT "Openretch" finally got around to offering us a "fast fibre" connection last year, NO thanks, but that did allow me to negotiate a 50% reduction in the cost of our Virgin BB & telephone line - so "thanks" to BT for that
