thinking about upgrading to a 4k box, unsure of a couple of things

    hi guys,
ive just bought a 65" 4K HDR TV.
i currently have a VU Duo2 - and have an additional DVB-C tuner card installed.
if i bought the Solo 4K or Ultimo 4K - can i use the tuner out of my Duo2? or are they different formfactors?
also, not sure if i can justify getting the ultimo, for an additional £169 over the solo 4k - can anyone convince me to pluck for the ultimo over the solo?
not too fussed about FBC tuners at all - and whats this new standard DVB-S2X or + - worth waiting for?
i looked at gigblue UHD box, but i dont think its HDR is it?
    thanks all!

What would you actually view satellite wise on 4k out of interest?

I've recently upgraded from the Duo2 to the Ultimo4k.
Apart from now getting the UHD channels I'm a bit disappointed. I thought zapping and booting would be lightening fast - but they are not.
In some respects I think I could have saved some money and gone for the Octagon SF4008 or one of the GigaBlue 4k models instead.

However, I was able to swop the twin DVB-S2 tuner over from the Duo2 to the Ultimo4k to save some money. It works fine. I do not have a Unicable LNB (motorised 1.80m PF c120 mount dish) so unable to use the FBC tuner facility in full. The DVB-S2X tuner in the Ocatgon may have been more use - although I've no real need for the French programming on 5w.

I could also swop over my 1.5TB 3.5"HDD too.

Very few indeed. Mainly just test channels. Not worth it ATM for them alone.
However, OK for UHD downloaded movies etc.

    Hi Guys,
Have had two dreamboxes - 8000 for about 9 years and a 7020Hd for about 7. Both have been brilliant but massive use and programming have taken their toll a little. This Christmas I decided to consider the VU boxes. Like you looked at the Ultimo, but thought that the solo 4k would be good value, and along with excellent help from Lee at our Goldwafers, who even emailed my wife purchasing it to check all would be fine, I am quite impressed with both speed and wonderful picture quality. It is running well, and so far as I can judge very fast compared to my dear dreamboxes. Just have to overcome the last thing - mounting and using my Cccam, but glad I bought it, if that helps. Good Luck - Brain

CCcam will not work on the ARM processor of the Solo4k. You need to use oscam.

    Hi 007.4,
Thanks - I did know about that, and have installed Oscam, but I also believe that you can add Cccam once Oscam is in place and it works in conjunction, or is that wrong? Cheers - Brain

Why would you want to add CCcam?
CCcam versions are old, and your lines will propbably work better in a newer Oscam, even if you could get CCcam to work, also it's a lot easier to load now, using the excellent softcam concierge tool, posted by hda5:

Just select the Oscam Server option, add your lines, and the tool will compile the necessary files for you, and save them, if you need them in the future.

The softcam concierge tool works, at least for me, using an older VU+ Duo2, but I have to click the save config option, which then stores the configs folder in the temp folder, the file path of which is displayed.
I then right click, on the My Computer option, select explore, and navigate to Local Disk (C), Users, "my name", Local, Temp, Rar$ Ex... then right click on the Configs folder, copy it, and paste it on my desktop, making it easier to find.
You then use Filezilla, or other FTP program, to connect to your receiver and transfer the files into the correct location, overwriting any there.
The most important is var, etc, tuxbox, config.
This is mostly from memory so please post back, if you try it, and it doesn't work.
I seem to recall echelon doing an Oscam Files example, as a guide, and other helpful threads, on the forum.

As said already you can use your existing dvb-c tuner in either the Solo4K or Ultimo4K.

The main advantage of the Ultimo4K is that you can run either 2x DVB-S2 FBC tuners (giving upto 16 satellite tuners when used with a unicable II lnb) or 1x dvb-c fbc tuner and 1x dvb-s2 tuner, giving you 8 cable tuners and upto 8 satellite tuners (with unicable II lnb) and still having that 3rd slot free for a conventional tuner, so like me, you could fit your current dvb-c tuner and switch it to T/T2, giving you a box with 18 tuners and covering sat, cable and terrestrial all in 1 box.

I also have added a vu+ turbo tuner to my box, giving a total of 19 tuners (8 cable, 8 sat, 7 via unicable and 1 via my motorised dish and then 3 T/T2 tuners).

As 007.4 says, the Ultimo4K is not the fastest box to boot, it is quicker than the Duo2 though (the Zero4K is probably the fastest to bootup from cold).

As for dvb-s2x and multistream, unless you need / want Italian, French or Ukrainian channels, it's pretty pointless right now imo (who knows in the future though).

Solo4K will take a 2.5" internal hdd, and the Ultimo4K will take 2.5 or 3.5"

There isn't a MAC version available, sorry. You could try installing Wine on your MAC. Wine enables you to run Windows applications on MAC. I can't say for sure if it'll work 100% or not, but try it and see.
