had one running for some time now m8s, its very good, only for me and family, easy to set up with old pc, but you need a big HD and a good net, handy even just around the home.

What is the Plex Media Server?

Install and run the Plex Media Server on a computer (or compatible NAS device) where all your media is stored and managed in movie, TV show, home video, music, and photo libraries. ... Wherever you are, press play, sit back, and enjoy your media as it streams from the Plex Media Server to your device.

How do I add a server to Plex?
    Create a new Library

Click the + Add Library button.
    Choose the appropriate Library Type.
Name the Library if the default name doesn't suit you.
    Click Next.
    Click Add Folder.
Browse for the folder to add.
    Choose Add once done.
Add additional folders if required in the same way.

What does plex do for Roku?

Plex organizes all of your personal media, wherever you keep it, so you can enjoy it on any device. With Plex, you can easily stream your videos, music, photos and home movies to your Roku using your Plex Media Server (available for free at http://www.plex.tv). ... With Plex, your media universe is constantly expanding.

Has anyone loaded/tried to load Plex on a Synology Diskstation NAS (I have a DS211j and a DS214play) and if so how did that go?
    Thx in advance.

I did try it m8, but think it is under powered, you have to get an expensive Nas for it to work properly.

Your NAS is not powerful enough to transcode on the fly, but if a movie doesn't need transcoded it will work fine. Personally I think Kodi is far better than Plex. Both do the same sort of thing. If you don't know the difference between the two you don't need Plex and you should stick to Kodi as it's free and doesn't need any subscription to do anything.

    PS,
You only really need to transcode stuff if you're streaming to a device that is not on your home network (IE via the internet), and the device you're streaming too doesn't have the correct codecs installed.

Sorry to disagree m8, kodi is only good for the ****, lol, PLEX is free, if you put IPTV (paid) its a 100% better, the one I have is instant play no buffering, sorry but i hate kodi, but its better than nothing.

Running plex on my i5 synology NAS - a DIY system, normal MB, 16GB ram, 5 x 6 TB HDD
will cope with transcoding for 2 people!
