    People's Spelling and Punctuation.

I've just seen this on BBC News:

Now call me an old whinger, but surely the Beeb can hire people with basic spelling abilities. I'm forever reading threads where people don't seem to know that a sentence starts with a capital letter and ends in a full stop or some other form of punctuation. Some people don't know when you change subjects, that you should start a new paragraph and lots of other very basic rules such as this.

BUT when the BBC are spelling basic words wrong, you have to wonder about the state of education today? I imagine that someone must proof read this stuff after someone else types it into the headlines box on a computer - or at the very least use a spell checker before putting it on a live feed.

    Rant over!

Agree mrdude it is not like they are using twitter @ 5am in the morning
sending out tweets like Mr.Trump where a few spelling mistakes would likely go unnoticed ??
And any garbage he writes can be put down to his old age and probable alzheimer's disease symptoms .
But the BBC goes worldwide and spelling basic words wrong seems more lazy than anything else .

BTW. R.I.P Liz Dawn probably the only character [ Vera Duckworth ] that was left that i would recognize and enjoy watching from back in the day when Coronation Street was actually worth watching . : ))

Hopefully my punctuation was somewhat adequate if not then please blame google and/or Larry Page and Sergey Brin for inventing such an intrusive and inadequate search engine .

Even where people use spellcheckers, they generally don't realise that the default setting on most applications is for American English, so American spellings start to creep in.

Yep I understand that - but surely the BBC can configure the spell checker to use a British dictionary. Also, why would you need a spell checker to spell 'Driving', it's not a difficult word to spell.
It's not just the BBC though, I see spelling mistakes in the national newspaper articles all the time. We have descended into a nation of 'Thickos'.

Yes, but that's only a typo, probably some ham-handed kid typing at warp speed.

I had to pull a BBC representative up on facebook yesterday for writing "COULD OF". I can forgive your average muffin in the street, but the BBC?

That's pretty much the same as people that don't know the difference between - 'Their', 'There', 'They're' and 'Too', To, 'Two'. School has changed quite a bit since I was a young whippersnapper, I wasn't a great student back then and either were most of the people in my class, but compared to kids nowadays - we were rocket scientists.

Exams are easy, modular learning and government policies and schools/colleges needing to reach targets so that a certain percentage of kids get A grades or even just exam passes has lead to a decline in kids education. Telling kids that it's OK to come second in sports and that taking part is all that matters and things like that have led to this. When kids leave school, coming second in a job interview leads to no job. The point is - we have wrapped these kids up in so much cotton wool that they think it's OK to be failures, they will get big shock come when the older generation die off and they need to think for themselves, with China and India becoming the next super powers and most of the tech jobs being out sourced to other countries because the kids here aren't smart enough to get jobs, compared to their foreign peers.

It starts with poor spelling & poor maths and teachers telling them it's OK to be a retarded mong.

To be honest I blame mobile phones and the OED for allowing made up bull**** words in the dictionary.

In my job I have to write on a daily basis but when I see notes from customers with problems like noise from breaks, gear nob worn and so forth I feel like giving up

The next generation is full of illiterate retards.

Do you mean - "The next generation is full of illiterate retards."

Ha ha, only joking, I knew what you meant, but I agree with you, this generation of kids and young *****s leave a lot to be desired when it comes to spelling/maths and even good manners seem to evade quite a few of them.

I can imagine a massive solar flare wiping out the electrical grid - the country would come to a standstill and these kids would all have withdrawal symptoms if they couldn't phone or text someone or use the internet to look up something they should already know.

Look at the film title "Dusk till dawn "!
I always thought 'til was short for until.
Another forum I visit, one poster always posts "dose" instead of "does" even when he /she changes names so everyone knows that she /he is the same person !
    Regards

Auto fill and auto complete stitch up many a novice, I worked in TV production for 45 years and always had a dictionary close at hand, when the computer systems arrived in the 80's we had spell check programmes on our pc's, Why ? because all the high end caption generators and edit systems didn't have them.

Most of the bollockings I witnessed for journalists were for poor spelling and grammar.

It is not even politically correct to be able to speak English correctly with a traditional regional British accent these days on the BBC, never mind being able to write it and spell it correctly as well.

On the subject of speaking English correctly on TV, I cringe every time I hear an announcer say that a programme is in "Haitch Dee" (HD).

i have not watched that youtube video for years but every single time it cracks me up and there is another one similar to that which is real funny .
The News Presenter obviously was bound to get the sack but knowing the yanks probably not she still should have been able to see that on the fly and just ignored it or prompted an advert break to review it , still funny years later however .
