just asked my next door neighbour who is a Professional Landscaper/Gardner, he has always mixed 50:1 with no problems with any make.

Most pro machines use 50/1. Some other cheaper machines use 25/1. Stick 50/1 and see if it runs ok, if it smokes badly, tip it out and use 25/1. A rich mix will do no harm, just burns excess oil. Its a too lean mix that will overheat and kill a two stroke.

At the risk of being a smart arse I think you have it the wrong way around, whist I agree that a too oily mix may oil up the plug and after a long period carbon up the ports a 50/1 mixture contains less oil that a 25/1. Could have been a typo?
