No need for a HDR TV to open HLG.

    Hi All,

How can I watch Hybrid log *****?

All you need is a 4K TV.

Quote BBC, BBC says that HLG has been created in such a way
that it doesn't need to be viewed on a specific type of display, so
you shouldn't need to go out and buy the very latest TV.
Although you'll still need a 4K TV, it
doesn't necessarily have to be HDR. End Quote.

So, who will upload a Software upgrade.
Will it be the BBC on 28e.
    Will it be SKY UK.
Will it be TV makers task.

Sky UK have already had a SKYQ box upgrade last
year (2016) so you can use BBC iplayer to open
Planet Earth2 HLG (not many UHD 4k with a HLG fix).
    19 Dec 2016.

Or will it be like Sky Perfect JSAT Japan
    4 October 2016.
Sky Perfect in response to the October
    commencement of HDR HLG broadcasts,
    a software update for the
    Toshiba's 4K Regza Z20X series is scheduled
to become available for download from
late August. Other companies' products are
also scheduled to become 4K HDR HLG-capable
    from this Autumn.

    Thanks BF.

i couldnt care less about hdr until its 100% finalised, sick of seeing new and improved hdr specs so called improvements year on year just to get you to keep on upgrading. Were nearing the end game in terms of TV's as we know it so they will just keep on trickling out the upgrades. More than happy with my SDR 4k TV.

HDR and HLG even Dolby vision will work on any 4K UHD TV but if your TV does not support those formats then you will NOT! benefit from the added WCG/BT.2020 improvements.

I have a couple of friends who bought early 2015 Samsung 4K UHD Tv's and they are perfectly happy knowing that there TV is SDR only and will never work with the new formats, Each to there own

    Hi All,

@3tv, Not sure What you mean by hdr.
YOU See (HDR) is an (ANARNYM) that
means its an (Abbreviation) like NATO.
NATO means All forces, not just ONE.

Now Your 4K, as you say is SDR OK, well
You will in a few month have to put up
with HRD HLG, (HLG is a HDR signal).

    3tv, BBC Quote...Hybrid Log ***** is
backwards compatible, SO can be used
to INCREASE the DYNAMIC range of
    STANDARD DYNAMIC RANGE 4K TVs.
    Because it's backwards compatible, it
means it can be supported by
    HDR and NON-HDR RECEIVERS.
IN Practice it will be relatively simple
    to broadcast (OVER THE AIR)
an HDR feed USING HLG. End Quote.

In OTHER WORDS as I SAID, ALL
4K TVs HDR or NON HDR will Open
    The BBC.,.ITV...Channel 4.. SKY UK
    BBC2..BBC 4. (Broadcast TV Signal).
When it starts with WINBLEDON BBC
    28e this Year (2017).

If you hlg meant HLG HDR and you waiting
    it to be 100% finalised.

BT 2020 made (HLG HDR) the
    INTERNATIONAL STANDARD for
    Broadcast TV and LIVE Streaming
    In JULY 2016.
How do you think Japan and this
year UK and most of Europe can begin
    (HLR HDR) Live Transmissions.

    Thanks BF.

    Hi All,

@digicon, Did you mean HDR10 and HLG and Dolby Vision.
Your right with HDR10, that about the standard for recorded
    HDR.
Yes you right with HLG HDR that will work WITH ALL 4k TVs.
Even your fiends 2015 4K TV.
HLG HDR will also work on CRTube
1960 TVs, but will not be as good as a 4K TV.

As for Dolby Vision, NO, It needs new Hardware
in the form of a ( V Chip ), the only UHD
or OLED TV to have the V chip for Dolby vision
up to today is (LG OLED).

And as for the forth HDR as Samsung
call it (HDR HDR10+) HDMI 2.1, was
just approved this 4 Jan (2017).

Thanks BF. Can't wait for the Tennis in HLG.

    Hi All,

Just to make it a little clearer.

BBC QUOTE, HLG has been designed as a
scene-referred system, which is what's used for
conventional TELEVISION. This means your TV at
home will be able to read the signal and use its
own internal technology to reproduce the
    intended image.

    Thanks BF.

astra HLG demo looked like every other demo channel. For BT2020 stuff like the Olympics I used madvr to convert it to rec709. I'll upgrade when im ready. I wont get suckered into there must have new and improved hdr variant only to have it replaced again next year. Its like washing power

theres plenty of DR in rec 709 for the likes of Tennis and Football.

if your in the market for a new tv just buy one instead of hanging on for the latest tech, next year they will be shoving HFR at you., they year after that 8k will be hear., and on and on and on..............

    Hi All,

Hi 3tv, I'm not putting my point over very well.

Iv been in the SAT game since DMAC pace box were
you paid £5 for a set of 6 numbers.
loaded then into DMAX box with remote and that opened
TV1000 4.8e Sirius for one month.
You had to have at least a 1M dish then. Funcard D9
    and programmer after DMAX.

MY POINT with HRD is the way (Even Today) every SELLER
    in marketing 4K HDR TVS.

We know there are now 4 HDR SYSTEMS.
    2016 there were 3 SYSTEMS.
As you say it keeps on going.

I bought my UHD 4K HDR TV when there where
    3 SYSTEMS ( AUGUST 2016 ), and NOT one
out of ALL the TVs in any SELLER Shop had
FULL HDR, they (AS of TODAY) are
ALL PARTIAL (INCOMPLETE) HDR 4k TVs

That's MY POINT, they should be selling HDR
4K TVs as INCOMPLETE HDR TVs.

It's a form of MISS SELLING because of the fact they
are not telling you ( SORRIE THIS HDR TV WILL
NOT OPEN the HDR HLG form of HDR the BBC or
SKY UK will use, BUT ALL the DOMO model
at the World shows have had HDR HLG Installed
    SIINCE 2014.

My UHD 4K HDR TV (Hisense 65XT 910) has an
    inbuilt 4K HDR Sat Tuner.
I have scanned in 4K HDR channels from 30w Hisapsat
to 28e. Out of All the channels My HDR 4K TV has only
opened ONE ( 1 ) HDR channel, that was
    ( travelXP 4k) 13e Hotbird.
The HDR is AUTO detect, on travelXP it lit UP
and picture and definition where MINT.

On 19e there is a HLG domo ( HLG test stream ) no
luck with that, No HDR HLG Fix yet.

    Thanks BF.

I would love to know how you got TravelXP to enable HDR on your TV as it is broadcast in HLG format which would need the HLG update to trigger any type of flagging system. see below from a recorded instance i did on the solo 4K and note the transfer characteristics part which i highlighted in Red:

So unless your TV has had a the HLG update this will play in UHD SDR format, by the way you also spam another forum with the same statements you claim here and they basically told you the same as i did a few weeks ago contact Hisense about the HLG update. OOOPS! thats right you already did and here is the reply:

    Code:
    I emailed hisense UK
hi can this TV set be upgraded by a firmware to play HLG broad casts what the BBC are tryling at the moment i do believe it needs to have HDMI 2.0b for this to happen I know the set has HDMI 2.0a but can this be updated to 2.0b looking forward to your replies. Thank you Darren

    This was there response
Hello Mr Marshall. Sorry, no. This not possible and is not planned at the moment. Regards. Helpdesk
    Hope that helps Bigfoot63
So there you have it now please let this rest finally or FFS go and buy a TV that does do HLG

    Hi All,

    @digicon, FIRST can I make a little
comment, (What seems to go into your
BRAIN seems to come OUT, UP SIDE DOWN).

FIRST I have NEVER emailed (Hisense).

Second THERE IS (TODAY 2/2.17) NO
HDR HLG 4k TV, on OFFER in the United KINGDOM.
IF YOU CAN FIND ONE ( IM STRAIT DOWN for A DEMO)
    YOUR WRONG Again (THICKOO).

@ THICKO, If I had an (HDR HLG) UPGRADE Software
    it should have FLAGGED UP
( HLG TEST STREAM ) 19e instead of just 2160p.

@ THICKO, Want to know how the HDR was FLAGGED
UP on My TV.. NOT THE TRANSFER.
    Down from (HLG).

(HEVC) The new broadcasting MODE will be facilitated
    with the new compression STANDARD,
    HEVC (ULTRA EFFICIENCY VIDEO CODING).
EUROPES FIRST (ULTRA HD demo CHANNEL) (4K1).
    and (TRAVELXP).
BROADCAST at 50 fps with 10-bit COLOUR DEPTH.

SO there YOU HAVE IT (THICKO)

COME ON NOW (NAME THAT HLG TV).
    YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSAND.

    Thanks BF.

    Hi All,

Hi digicon, Had a QUICK look at the LG at the top
of this Page (LG 86UH955v) £7499.00p (NO HLG)
NO HLG, It is a Multiple HDR TV, BUT
only Generic HDR10, and Dolby Vision, Just
the Same as the OLD Lgs.

POP over to Japan for an HLG TV and your
in LUCK, they are ALL (HDR HLG) ENABLED
FOR SKY PERFECT (JSAT). SAD VERY SAD.

    Thanks BF.

Sony announced at ces they will add hlg to there new TV's via software later in the year. Don't know what all the fuss is about. its not needed for sports. I watched the "2012 World Cup Final in 4k 709, Rolland garros the last few years in 4k 709. Countless other feeds. HFR is whats needed not HDR

    Hi All,

Hi 3tv, The HLG HDR is expected to make a BIG change
in the way we view LIVE SPORT.

When the BBC and SKY announce later this year
they will start 4K HLG HDR broadcast TV,
that's when you will see the change in viewing.

The difference between HDR10 and HLG is,
When the HDR HLG hits the STB there's a Flag
which lets the HDMI know there is a
HLG UHD image coming over with
    10-bit colour depth.

All the TV needs to be aware of is the
    environment the content is being
    viewed IN.
Then the FUN starts, The HLG has the ability
to ALTER the HDR HLG image based on the
    VIEWING ENVIRONMENT-- light room,
dark room, even specific brightness levels
    measured in NITS.
    This feature makes HLG fundamentally
different from (HDR 10) a more satisfying
    viewing EXPERIENCE.

At the other end, HLG is very successful
    particularly when SHOOTING LIVE SPORTING
events in stadiums where one HALF of the pitch
is bathed in SUNLIGHT and the other in DARKNESS.
    MINT.

My TV has is HDR its (HDR 10) and I scanned in
4k channels from 30w to 28e and it FAILED on every
4k HDR channel to light up the HDR,

    Thanks BF.

Theres enough dr in rec 709 for sports. You can raise shadows / reduce highlights and fit it in a the rec 709 color space. HFR is need not more dr. the current hardware from sky wont handle hfr, neither will your tv.
