    Galileo satellites.

The successful launch of four Galileo satellites yesterday brings the network up to a total of 18 in full operation out of the planned total of 24 (with six in-orbit spares). So it's now very close to being a fully operational network and will deliver sub meter positional accuracy as well as introducing new features such as the search and rescue service which can relay distress signals from emergency beacons to a rescue coordination centre and, importantly, notify the sender that the signal has been received and help is on the way, a first.

Currently 1400 satellites are travelling around the earth with about 200 being launched each year. I wonder about the effect on nature and if these satellites contribute towards the weather records we seem to keep breaking more so than so called global warming.

I watched that black and white film set up in the science lab must have been 1961 - 1962, it scared the life out of everyone, seeing the flash, mushroom cloud and commentary saying that you have 10 secs or less to live. Cover all windows with cross sticky tape, not much good if there isn't any wall remaining.
