Comedian Victoria Wood Dies Aged 62

Comedian Victoria Wood has died aged 62 from cancer, her publicist has said.

She passed away at her home in London surrounded by family.

Her publicist, Neil Reading, said: "Victoria Wood has sadly passed away, after a short but brave battle with cancer.

"The multi Bafta award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her north London home with family this morning. She was 62.

"The family ask for privacy at this very sad time."

In a career spanning over 40 years Wood wrote and starred in numerous sketches, plays, films and sitcoms, including the award-winning comedy Dinnerladies.

She also toured the country for years with her live comedy act.

Survived 2 strokes in 2004, in 2005 donated my body too medical research with the university hospital in Oslo, discussed it with my children who approved my decision, have registered this fact with police, family doctor and local hospitals, carry a body donation card in my ( otherwise empty ) wallet.
Autumn 2015 diagnosed heart problem driving license revoked, now 6 months later as stable have applied for renewal.

Moral is donate your body too medical research if you suffer ailments, thus you can maybe help to find a cure for others.

Victoria Wood's brother pays emotional tribute from his County Durham home

Chris Foote Wood, 75, of Darlington said the world had lost one of its brightest stars following the death of his sister on Wednesday

The brother of comedian Victoria Wood has paid an emotional tribute to his youngest sister.

The actress died at home surrounded by family after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday.

Chris Foote Wood, 75, the star’s brother who lives in Darlington, County Durham spoke out on behalf of his family following the tragic news.

Mr Wood said that the world had been “robbed” of one of its brightest stars.

He said: “I learned today that my youngest sister Victoria has died after a short illness.

“It is a great shock, particularly as I am the eldest of the four children of Stanley and Helen Wood, and Victoria the youngest,

“But more than that I feel that Victoria’s death has robbed us of one of the brightest talents of our generation. It wasn’t just that Victoria was hugely talented in so many different fields, she was also outstanding in her tremendous, single-minded drive and determination to pursue her chosen career.”

During a prolific career, she had written and starred in dozens of plays, films, sitcoms and sketch comedy shows to say nothing of enjoying a wonderfully successful career as a stand up comic.

She started her rise to fame in 1974 when she won the talent show, New Faces, but her fame really took hold in the 1980s with a string of TV shows like Victoria Wood As Seen on TV and Wood and Walters, in which she starred with her longtime friend and collaborator, fellow Bafta award winner, Julie Walters.

Mr Wood continued: “Success did not come easily to Victoria, and it was only after years of struggle that she achieved her well-deserved national acclaim.

“I am hugely proud of what my sister has done so successfully in different fields of entertainment. It has been a privilege to have her as a sister, and particularly to have been able to observe at first hand how she developed her career from the earliest beginnings.”

Mr Wood said that his niece Grace and nephew Henry are “absolutely devastated” by the news.

He added: “Another reason I admire Victoria is that she was determined from the start to give her two children as normal an upbringing as possible and to shield them from unwanted media attention. In this she succeeded superbly, aided in every way by her then husband Geoffrey Durham who has continued his close support for their children after he and Victoria divorced in 2002.”

I've always like Victoria Wood, despite not really watching ALL her series on TV over the years, probably mainly the 80's & 90's, bur always found her as sharp as a razor and so 'down to earth' despite her fame!
She really WIILL be sorely missed.
