hi all just bought new Seagate 4 gig expansion drive to put my video files on and also use to record from spiderbox 6000.

but the the spiderbox does not (see or recognise the 4 gig drive) drive is formatted to nfts from factory,

any ideas or free software to be able to use this drive?

my other hard drives work ok

Firstly you never said if it was a 2.5" hard drive or if it was USB3. Some drives require extra power requirements and USB3 requires slightly more power than USB2, so it could be the Spiderbox USB port is not supplying enough power to power the drive. Try the drive in a PC to see if it works - if so you may need to get yourself a USB Y cable and use 2 USB ports to supply enough power to the drive.

Old USB ports only supply up to 500mA, USB3 ports supplies about double that so if your drive needs 600mA - your spiderbox is not going to supply enough power - you could also get a powered USB hub and try that.

I think he means 4TB not 4 gig.

If it's seagate it will be 3.5 hard drive with it's own power supply usb3 or usb2

On spider remote...press menu...then go to multimedia
come down to my recordings...obversally if its a new drive..empty...nothing will be there
you will see at bottom...green button=usb device...press that
this will now put you on a page as follows
    usb device =usb
    partion = 1
under that you will see format...click that...(this will erase all on drive if its a drive you have previously used)
after clicking format...a box will appear telling you that its formatting...it only takes seconds on empty..ie new..drive
your drive is now formatted correctly

I believe that the spiderbox 6000hd uses a 12v power supply, if you're good with a soldering iron - you could easily take a 12v feed from the spiderbox to power this - that way you will have load more ports, or if your have a spare plug socket this comes with a 12v adapter.

    Code:
    http://www.e bay.co.uk/itm/ORICO-Aluminum-30W-4-Port-USB-3-0-HUB-5Gpbs-with12V-2-5A-Power-Supply-For-Laptop-/161891538433?hash=item25b17cd601:g:1UwAAOSwFMZWqthE
You will then have an extra ports + this can be used with a PC/Laptop whenever you needed that feature + it's USB 3

I can't remember how many usb ports the spiderbox has but if it has 2, you could use this to get enough power to the drive:
    Code:
    http://www.e bay.co.uk/itm/DAINTY-UTILITY-DUAL-A-TO-MICRO-B-USB-3-0-Y-CABLE-FOR-SUMSANG-GALAXY-S5-USB-HUB-/322050455760?hash=item4afbb3f8d0:g:UUkAAOSwyjBW3rAh

However you have said you're using the drive already with an existing power supply - so that's probably not your issue. It could be down to the NTFS and the spiderbox maybe only reads fat32 file system, you can format a large 4TB drive as fat32 (contrary to what people say), here is a windows program called - fat32gui which will do that for you. Note that fat32 formatted drives can't store files over 4 gigabytes in size.

hi all the drive works on my pc, an older ntfs drive works with spiderbox guiformat told me the drive was too big over 2tb.

however I have noticed the blue status led does not blink or flash when connected to spiderbox (it flashes when connected to pc) an older 3gig Seagate when connected to spider led flashes but then puts spider into standby.

when trying to use multimedia to format it just says no device, there is no green button , the spider is not seeing the drive , other drives work ok so spider usb port I would assume is ok

completely stuck now as the idea was to transfer spider vids to new drive for storage, will try with another spider to see if it recognises the drive

tried with another spider same issue not connected or recognised drive also feels lopsided when lifted but works with pc but transfer speeds seem low 14mbps

On your PC create three ntfs partitions two 1.2tb and one 500gig or around that

Did you read the following 2 posts in the thread that I posted earlier:

I seem to remember If you try and record over 4Gb you need to format not in FAT32 but NTFS file format.

It is a windows OS restriction.
    ================================= ====================

This is how i connect my wd my passport 1tb for the first time
on spider remote...press menu...then go to multimedia
come down to my recordings...obversally if its a new drive..empty...nothing will be there
you will see at bottom...green button=usb device...press that
this will now put you on a page as follows
    usb device =usb
    partion = 1
under that you will see format...click that...(this will erase all on drive if its a drive you have previously used)
after clicking format...a box will appear telling you that its formatting...it only takes seconds on empty..ie new..drive
your drive is now formatted correctly
now go to multimedia... recorder settings...and come down to default recording period...has default it is 15 mins
by pressing left or right you can increase recording period by 15 mins...i set it to 2 hours
if i notice a film i want record is 2hr 30 mins..i set it accordonlly...then after put back to 2hrs
i have recorded in past 7 hrs in one go...playback perfect...
i have tried many different drives...but for me wd my passport work faultlessly
    like i said in earlier post...i use 500 gig wd...and 1tb...

and if so were they of any help to you.

Have a read of this for formatting over 2TB - fat32 can be up to 16TB:
    Code:
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/format-large-hard-drive-fat-fat32/
Anyway as someone has said that spiderbox reads NTFS this is not your problem, You say there is NO led activity when the drive is plugged in - OK let me explain that a USB cable has only got 4 pins:

    Pin 1: 5 Volts (red)
    Pin 2: Data - (green)
    Pin 3: Data + (white)
    Pin 4: Ground (black)

As you have said your drive is already working on a PC so the USB cable must be working fine (although it you should plug it into a USB3 port to get the max speed benefit), the Drive works and it doesn't matter about the File system being NTFS as someone else has said.

As the drive is powered try this - plug the drive into the power supply and connect the USB cable to the Drive but not to the PC - then get a multimeter and check between Pin4 on the end USB cable your drives ground to see if there is continuity, if there is the Ground is OK - if that's fine check for voltage between Pin 1 and Pin 4 - if you see anything (i.e. 5 volts), it could be that the Spiderbox doesn't like power going into it's USB port (as it likes to put voltage out) and shuts the port off from the rest of the circuit board - (however this is speculation on my part). It could also be that the drive is drawing too much power from the spiderbox (even though it has it's own power).

In reality you don't need pin 1 connected as this is usually only needed to supply power up the USB drive/thumbdrive - which your drive doesn't need as it has it's own power supply. If you have an old usb3 cable lying about - you could try disconnecting pin1 and see if it works with the spiderbox.

Your main pins are the data in and out - these are the ones that make the leds blink (showing data is being sent and received), and as with anything - it's always wise to have a ground connected.

Over the years I, and many others, have had USB hard drives and memory sticks which work in some sat receivers and not in others. Even makes which some people find work in their box will not work in others. Seems completely random.

Hope that your problem is a technical one which can be solved with the advice being suggested.

I had a look at the pinouts for USB 3 and USB 2:

They are different as USB 3 has 5 extra pins, and usb 2 only has 4, if you look here you'll see what I mean:

Also have a read of this, it explains about some USB 3 cables being incompatible with older usb 2.0 devices:

    Code:
    http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/usb_3_explained.html#USB_Backwards_Compatibility
It might be that you will need to use a different USB 3 cable some of those extra pins on your cable might not be compatible with the spiderbox usb port.
