Go to app download store and install HERE Maps (from nokia)
and install what ever map you want UK is about 700MB
....note you have to tell it to work off line in the settings!

Just checked it out, and it looked quite good. However it can not find my postcode and the house has been here for 150 years! When I enter my postcode it changes it to a house down the road. When I put in my address it changes my address and gives me two options to choose from, both in villages near by.
Sorry it is Google Play I got the App from!
Its the best 'free' one I know and even if you have no credit on your smart phone or signal you can still use it via GPS, so not bad for free!
