i use to have a external hdd plugged into mine can confirm they do work , but can recall there was a problem with some hdd's not getting recognized.

i can also recall something about some software called usb adjuster , but not sure if that was for drives or just usb sticks , i will pull out the hdd drive i use to use tomorrow and try it out .

stopped using the hdd drive due to the noise of it constantly running added a usb stick to mine instead.

Maybe it depends on how the drive is formatted - ie fat16/32/ntfs/etx2/3/4/HFS - or if the usb is usb2 or usb3?

USB3 drives require more power to run & won't work from a USB2 port, also some TV's don't recognize NTFS or EXT file systems?

Some USB2 drives require a Y usb cable to supply enough power to run the drive, I have a few different laptops - and the USB outputs vary in the amount of milliamps they output, one laptop works with a standard usb on a certain drive, the same drive requires a Y cable on another laptop to work.

A pain for sure - but you should try that as well m8.

ok here the software to adjust the hard drive to correct format for tv , it records off free-view and sat connections.

once the hdd is converted it does not shown up in a windows pc , think its converted to xfs form.

works on hdd and usb sticks.

no the software does not work in w10 , do you have another pc you can use ,w 7 or erlier i can confirm works.

if not there maybe later software out there , look for similer name (samsung usb adjuster) or software to convert to xsf .

prob would have been a good idea to post what you wanted to record from in the first post , its only the sat and free-view internal tuners that give me a option to record from on the plugged in hdd.

i have the d8000 that is smart but still will only record off internal tuner's .

so unless someone else can point you in another direction you maybe out of luck.

I did do a quick test on my Samsung Smart TV. Used an old powered
external USB drive, 32 fat. It would record Freeview, but...nothing else.

There is no TV out connection now, unlike our last Plasma TV, so they have stopped
you recording or transmitting what is shown onscreen. All about copyright.

I personally use external recorders, mainly DVD RW.
