4:2:2 is a video standard often used by broadcasters to prevent us mere mortals looking in on the broadcast unless the satellite receiver we have is capable of accepting a 4:2: 2 signal, ala an Azbox. You can also unscramble it by streaming using VLC player but that's another story.

You may have heard of DVB -S and DVB-S2, these are the usual sat transmission standards that all receivers, depending on age, are capable of receiving.

    So now you know.

    4:2:2 is an mpg file.

Receivers wise it is nothing to do with software, most decoder chips simply don't support it.
I have a AzBox, which supports the formatt, unfortunately its up the loft as I could have done with it yesterday for the Stoke game as that was 4:2:2, might have to get it back down for the next round of the cup.

Most satellite receivers will only clear 4:2:0. The old AZBoz was one of the very few receivers that had 4:2:2 capability built in as standard. It was quite popular 3-4 years ago when 4:2:2 was used for a lot of feeds.

It is quite easy to clear 4:2:2 channels on your PC by feeding the signal through an application (can't remember the name). But I suspect if they start to use 4:2:2 frequently for feeds they will just encrypt them, just like they do with 4:2:0 feeds.
    thanks for the explanation burnham
