How can a dummie use VLC on DM8000?

I presume the issues with using VLC on a DM8000 are independent of what image you use, but anyway, I am using Newnigma2 with the default VLC plugin.

I primarily am interested in playing avi files, stored on my computer or in the /media/hdd/movie folder on the DB.

So I configure a VLC server on the DB, and have tested both the ip-address of the pc as well as the ip-adress of the DB, and entering the folder name.

I presume there is no need for running VLC on the computer unless you want to stream video from an external source?

In my test with pc-url, I entered just h: , h: being a usb-stick on the pc. I had both avi and other files on the root of h:

    with DB-url, I entered /media/hdd/movie

But I only got error messages, unable to open ...

I have searched for information but what I've found so far has not been quite as explicit on how to do things as I would like, so I hope someone may help in sorting out my problems or point to sources of more comprehensive information.

    You Presume wrong then
The vlc plugin on the dreambox is just a frontend for the main vlc program on your pc,

And the reason you get an error is probably because the .avi file is not in a format that the DB understands - the link above alludes to that.

Ian gave me a set of parameters that convert the .avi whilst streaming it to the DB. It is on here somewhere but it was a few years back so finding it may be a bit of a challenge - if I'm on my PC later I'll see if I still have the info.

Note Echelon's comment that not all DBs are the same but I think VLC can be set to transcode to suit, with the right parameters.

agree with detlef, never worked on my dm800 and I gave up and bought an icecrypt and fitted an internal HDD, now superceded by the VU DUO 1 eith internal HDD which plays almost all formats perfectly , even from my NAS

the VU solo 2 (or DUO 1) also plays avi , mp4 , mkv and other formats, so the trick is , buy a VU , even if its a DUO 2

or buy an MX2 , or stream from a NAS to a smart tv like my new smart sony HD tv (KDL47W805A 3D W8 Series Full HD 1080p Led Tv with X-Reality PRO)

or put on a stick and play in a dvd player, an mx2 , a spiderbox , blade , tm5402 , so many , many options for avi playback exist

in my humble opinion it will NEVER work on the dreambox 8000 (or 800) - but I am no expert

the various alternatives are under discussion here
