London is a "BIG" place,......and Thor at 0.8w is the closest Satellite.

Yes but you need to set your receiver onto something, so you use the nearest satellite for as acurate as possible setting of your motor.

Edit:. You beat me to it Dark Cloud

What sort of reference do the above satellites refer too ? it cant be which sats are exactly due south because most would be wrong, please enlighten me what the sat positions are relevant to.

Top of the arc for the cities on that list. Get Helsinki for example. Longitude is 24.56E so the nearest sat to top of arc is 23.5E for that city and so on and on. We are often confused here that ALL set the motor to the due south position, but it only aplies to our geographical location, Each city has a different reference sat

The sat positions look the closest to the true south position, as indicated by the longitude reading. Your longitude reading provides you with your true south position, positive values = East, negative values = West, of course this is more useful for those of us using 36V motors, as we have to use old receivers, capable of handling a 36V motor, or use a V Box II positioner, capable of using the Diseqc commands to get our new receiver to position our dish.
If using USALS then the above information is not really required, but some people will still prefer to align the dish to their nearest true south satellite.

What is angle between true south and magnetic south?

    _http://www.satellite-calculations.com/Satellite/lookangles.htm

This will allow you to get your true South...the longtitude reading is your true South

A simple way of finding your true south is to go into Google Maps and click on your street (it involves zooming in) and then on what's here. The header bar will then show your latitude and longitude.

So for me that is 7.4E - don't go posting the full details to six decimal places as it can pinpoint you to within a few centi-metres** .

Using 7.4E and KoS we find Eutelsat 7A at 7E with loads of FTA channels to set up on.

[** Note that in northern Europe, one degree is about 55 miles (88 km). So a change of one in the sixth decimal place is just under 10 cm]
