software ? no not really, unless dvdshrink or dvd2one may do it, or try videohelp dot com

what I do with boxes is record from them onto my sony hxd970 dvd/hdd recorder and choose a manual mode recording format like MN15 or MN18 and play the recording from the sat box (like sly) and record onto the internal HDD of the dvd recorder, then top and tail it, remove unwanted stuff like adverts and then fastdub onto a drvr

if you have set the recording mode correctly, it will always fit onto a single layer dvdr disk , but the longer the recording , the lower the format and therefore the lower the quality

but in SP mode which is MN21 you get 2 hours onto a disk, so 2.5 hours would be something like MN18 or MN19

I know it's not a direct answer to your question,
But you can buy DVD+R Dual Layer Disks to do the task you require [good pc shops sell them as well as the bay]
hold up to 8.5GB per disk.

ConvertXtoDVD will handle over 2.5hrs to 4.7Gb DVD. A lot depends
on your file format though it seems to handle a good selection.

Depends on what you have recorded to, like echelon if I have
recorded on USB on my STB due to the language I have a recorder
hooked up. Have to use playback & select SP or LP on my recorder
then it will encode to suit.

I mainly record to RW then if I want to save material just copy via
    PC to DVD.

    Regards catoro.

It was "The Doors soundstage performance" . It's around 15Gb total size . I can copy it over the the PC so I'll give convertX a go . Thx for the help .
