    Hd-dvd recorders

    Hi all

Can any members recomend a good HD recorder one that will record to a disc, as well as to hard drive? Have been reading reviews on quite a number and have not found a favourable one yet. The majority are to hard drive only or to discs only? Sincerely hope members will respond. The icing on the cake would be if the recorder had an HDMI connection

generally speaking only panasonic do a HD dvd recorder here in the uk , and they are very VERY expensive too , as are the disks

a lot of combos will only play HD dvd and wont write to them , only to the HDD , so are considered a HD pvr with HD dvd playback only

more info on this can be found on avforums

ps:- all uk HD recorders have a HDMI connection , that is the whole point of them being HD in the first place

Would be even better if these recorders had an hdmi INPUT that would be the iceing on the cake.

wont happen due to copyright infringement ( dvd piracy )

the main reason for hdmi is to only allow active devices like recorders to connect their outputs to a passive input , as per a tv or monitor

this is why you can connect a hdmi from recorder to tv and it works , as it identifies the 2 items and allows an output to connect to an input

even then it only works for scart copying if the source material isnt HDCP protected to prevent copying the content to dvd

this is one reason why component is being phased out in 2012 , to stop copying

the best part of the HD hype is we are led to believe its for better picture quality , and we thereby ignore the anti-copying measures it introduces into our systems

it can probably be done on a pc , or if using a dvd recorder that has component out as mentioned above , otherwise no , that is the whole point of the manufacturers restricting the outputs and HDCP being implemented , to stop ppl like you from copying HD content from hdd to dvd blurays ( anti-piracy )

in answer to post #1 , the panny BWT-800 should do most of what he requres , for £600 to £750 depending where he looks

    Panasonic Blu-Ray & 500GB Hard Drive Recorder with 3D Blu-Ray Playback & Freeview HD

    PRODUCT CODE: MIP-PAN-DMRBWT800EB
    MPN: DMR-BWT800EB

Blu-Ray & 500GB Hard Drive Recorder with 3D Blu-Ray Playback Freeview HD Tuner WiFi Built-In 2 HDMI connections & Pause and rewind live TV.

    HDMI Upscaling
    Region: 2
    DVD+R/+RW Recording
    DVD-R/-RW Recording
    Blu-Ray Recording
    Hard Drive Recording Capacity: 500GB
    HDMI sockets: 2
    Scart sockets: 2
    RGB enabled scart sockets
    Optical connection
    MP3 playback
    DVD+R/+RW Playback
    DVD-R/-RW Playback
    DVD RAM playback
    JPEG playback
    Divx playback
    RGB PC Input
    Remote Control
    Pause live TV
    Number of Tuners: 2
    Digital text compatible
    7 day EPG

it may even allow HD programs from say itv or bbc HD channels to be copied or re-encoded onto dvd , but I dont see how it can do this using disks to hdd and back to disks , or it may restrict the HD channels if they werent fta to begin with , all depends on the HDCP flags I would think

I suspect you are getting mixed up between HDMI and HDCP

    Hi
Thanks Echelon for the information. Cannot afford the prices for the upper range of Panasonic. Fortunately, a friend has called and brought me and the wife a Panasonic DMR-EX83 EB-S . Nice gesture, cannot complain when someone gives one as a gift.
    thanks to all
    collieman.
