    broken charger socket

My navman f series has a dodgy in car charging plug, and now the mini charging socket has snapped off taking the contacts with it, so I will need to cut the plug off the charger and solder it permanently inside, the problem is where do I solder it? directly across the battery terminals or does it need to go somewhere specific on the mother board? as I said the original contacts on the charging socket have been ripped off.
    Any tips gratefully recieved.

cheers highway1, but the problem is that when the mini usb socket pulled away from the board, it took the contacts with it so there is nowhere to solder a new socket onto, hence the question about connecting direct to battery, but don't want to blow battery up.
