There are now two BBC HD channels, one will be the same as BBC1 called-surprisingly-BBC1 HD simulcasting the BBC1 output, they will also be keeping the BBC HD channel for non BBC 1 stuff.
    BBC1 HD starts early Nov.

BBC1 HD will show the same programmes as BBC1, but like ITV1 HD, not all the stuff will be high def. Eastenders, for example, won't be going HD until christmas, and will be upscaled SD until then.

Basically, those programmes that currently are shown on BBC HD in parallel to BBC1 are the only HD programmes that will be available for the time being (One Show, Antiques Roadshow, Holby, Masterchef, Apprentice etc...)

BBC HD will continue with a mixture of programmes from all the BBC channels, (Top Gear, Hairy Bikers etc...)

BTW: MotoGP from Estoril is on BBC HD this weekend

Does anyone know why BBC use a resolution of 1440x1080 rather than the full 1920x1080 that Sky use?

Is it just to skimp on bandwidth?

Thanks for the heads up, on another note I've got a screen that can get HD channels that are in the clear but couldn't get ITV HD because of the way its broadcast but just picked up STV HD (Scottish ITV) when scanning for BBC 1 HD didn't even know about it its been running since June

Yes I know the freqs its actually in the clear on three freqs the one above is Granada HD but it is a red button option on freesat and unless you can manually add certain details pids etc it cant be picked up and used just from a simple scan which is all my box will do

Edit: Seems ITV HD is now broadcast as a normal channel not sure why my box didn't add it after a scan but its there now

1440x1080 is the old 4x3 screen size, it certainly takes less bandwidth but it may just be because its still in its trial period and will open up later.

1440x1080 is a 16:9 resolution with non-square pixel. The use of non-square pixel lets you save bandwidth.
It's a pity I just can't get those TPs under 11.000 from Astra 28.2 here in Italy...

BBC wont give a straight answer to the 1440x1080 in fact they wont even answer questions about it any more it doesn't save bandwidth because that gets used for higher bit rates instead

Think your find they are going to keep the 1440x1080 resolution

Zyknyp was right in some respects the older hi def cameras use 1440x1080 resolution but that's still not a reason to broadcast in that resolution
