    Question 5.1 cinema and sly??

hiya ,, hope someone can assist..
am getting a new hd tellie/as they say home cinema this week ,,
in order for sly to be in 5.1 sound does the optical lead that seems to be required ... go from sly to the dvd player( optical socket ) or from the sly to the television ( opitical ) socket

finally assume its dvdplayer to television hdmi
    sly to television hdmi,( also)

    What amplifier have you got?

5.1 sound is the same as surround sound..

I have optical from hummy to yamaha rx-v1700 amp ( ca. £1000 ) with 5 speakers ( if I had 7 speakers then 7.1 sound )and an active sub woofer, the hummy is connected to the telly with a hdmi cable.

So hd piccy on the telly hd and true surround sound from the amp

    Regards

hi sko medal , i am using the 5.1 home cinema as the amp.
    not a seperate amp ...

i assume i was to understand the 5.1 ( unlike the dolby prologic i have right now).
is sound comes from diffrent speakers, ie left/right/centre and rear left/right?

just to clarify the optical lead does not go into the tv.

It goes from the sly box to the amp (or whatever else it is your 5 speakers and sub are connected to, should be an amp though).

@skomedal, let rip kid! I have felt like doing it many times.

Mate the optical on the dvd will be an audio out, not in.

Now unless your dvd player has a built in amp, where you can connect all your speakers and sub to I doubt this will work.

See if u can get a jpeg or something of the back of the player and post it on here so I can see.

BTW I see you are allergic to the thanks button, lol.

You have me confused. Also the optical out from a sky box is not the most reliable but if thats all it has then so be it.

Look at it this way. The DVD player has optical out ie it outputs so connecting sky to it will not work.

No point in getting off on the wrong front and things not working.

You should have a SKY HD box , say the make, A HD tv, say the make and model, a dvd player, say the make and model, then an amp that can take a lead from the dvd player, either HDMI or optical or coax for DD5.1 sound.

Say make and model of amp/receiver.

If I have totally misunderstood then ignore me but I am intrigued.

Mate you the most confusing set up ever, lol.

What the hell have you bought exactly. Is it a tv? A sound system?

From what you describe at the moment it sounds like you have bought the following

    A TV of some nature
    A dvd player
    5 speakers
    A sub woofer
    An amp.

Werent they suppose to fit it for u today?

    ok the tv is a 47 lgh5000 , it came as a package ie lg tv/lg home cinema 5.1 ( 2 front/2 rear /centre + subwoofer,,,,
well if its 5.1 have to assume THE DVD PLAYER AND a correct dvd film in 5.1 will work!!!
my question was really will the sly hd receiver ( getting monday) work in 5.1 if a particular programme is broadcast in 5.1!! i actually thought using a dvd player as the amp it would,,,,,
so may be a optical lead was £40 waste of money!!!
seems skomedal spent about £1000 on a amp box and i dont want another box!!!

its a pity really as i would have thought someone has a dvd player connected to sly& works. in 5.1
OH WELL MAY BE I HAVE LOST THE WILL to live.

How can I get Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound with HD?

Many HD programmes are broadcast in stunning Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, delivering top quality audio to accompany your HD picture. In order to immerse yourself in surround sound, you'll need a compatible home cinema system. Don't worry if you don't have one – you'll still experience the same amazing picture quality of high definition and stereo sound.
rumour has it you need to connect the Thompson skybox HD with the optical cable as the HDMI only passes dolby 2.0 and not 5.1.

and please stop picking on other users!

Mate you dont get what we are saying, a 5.1 system must have an amp!

Now where do u plug your speakers into? That will be your amp and that will be where you put your sky optical.

All the hdmi will do is pas the sound to your telly, and in turn your tv will project 2.0 sound.
