these tricks only work if the firmware is a patch, no patch no tricks.
Menu: submenu: System Information no p after the S/W version = not patched. When it shows the technomate logo in the menus: not patched! first load patch.

when viewing on any channel and you enter 8 2 8 1 it should get you in the C S settings menu. Check if patch is on. goto menu to submenu system information. you should see these:
    [C A S menu] [B I S S menu], if patch is not active press this sequence 2 0 0 4
    B I S S menu on any channel: 8 2 8 0
    C A S menu on l o c k e d: channel: [m u t e] [e x i t]

where [ ] represents the remote button
giving in the sequence should be rather fast, so you see in the top right hand corner the channel number

I suppose you have the TM hooked-up in your local computernetwork with straight (not crossover) ethernetworkcable Cat5:
    Code:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable
to the router and the router is setup to distribute IP addresses.
IN the TM menu go to System Settings and submenu IP settings there you would find this setting:
DHCP usage = Off change this to On
Press the Red button to scan. If all is well the fields should be completed.

for usage on 8 2 8 1 I have to point you to this discussion:
Ethernet & Serial and hope you can figure this one out.

gateway should be address of the router: it is the gate to the WAN (Wide Area Network) in a normal home network.
In my case this would be 172.19.3.1.
In XP when you open the My netwerk locations and then select on the left hand side Show network connections. It will show the available network connections like LAN, Wireless, 1394 , ...
If you use LAN (cable) or Wireless right click on that icon for that connection and select in the popup menu Status Top Left corner you have 2 tabs, select the Support (or simular). this window will now show:
Address type (address type DHCP assigned) (router provided)
    IP-Address: 172.19.3.3 (address for computer)
Subnetmask: 255.255.0.0 (must be the same for all devices in your home network. Could be 255.255.255.0 or 255.0.0.0)
Standard-gateway: 172.19.3.1 (address of gateway used)
all these addresses are mostly different and given by the router in your home network.
